Unkle Max Radio Show for Monday, October 17, 2005, AD
8-9 am

The Beatles - Suite from the Live At the BBC CD (Apple)
"A Hard Day's Night"
"I Wanna Be Your Man"
"Roll Over Beethoven"
Comment: Complete with chatter between tracks; my favorite Beatles CD, in terms of the number of times I've played it on my show.

The Beach Boys -"Long Promised Road"
CD: Endless Harmony (Capitol)
Comment: Really nice 1972 live version of a track from the group's Surf's Up album.

Lucinda Williams - "Lonely Girls"
CD: Essence (Lost Highway)

Michael Nesmith - A long set of songs:
"Lazy Lady"
CD: Tantamount To Treason (Awareness)

Nesmith - "Only Bound"
CD: Nevada Fighter (Awareness)

Nesmith - "Highway 99 With Melange"
CD: Tantamount To Treason (Awareness)

Nesmith - "Roll With The Flow"
CD: And The Hits Just Keep On Coming... (Awareness)

Nesmith - "Different Drum"
CD: And The Hits Just Keep On Coming... (Awareness)

Nesmith - "Some Of Shelly's Blues"
CD: Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash (Awareness)

Comments: A Michael Nesmith primer, in celebration of the announcement that his long-awaited new studio album, Rays, will be released shortly. Nesmith is one of the most interesting and influential figures in rock and roll history. A member of the Monkees, he established himself as an important solo artist through his work with the First National Band, and later in the 70s virtually invented music videos (and literally invented the idea of an all-music-video TV network, which he sold to Viacom as... MTV!). All of the above discs were originally issued on RCA Records and the vinyls aren't that hard to find; BMC Europe released them on 2-for-1 CDs (with bonus tracks); the Awareness CDs are single disc, domestic (USA) reissues sans bonus materials.
Those who want to find any of this material or more info on Nez are herewith referred to his official website, Michael Nesmith's Videoranch, where you can find both the BMG and Awareness discs, as well as other Nez material, including videos and lotsa news and downloads.

Miles Davis - "Dig"
CD: Dig (Prestige)
Comment: With Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean et al. One of my favorite early Miles tracks.

Anita O'Day - "Sweet Georgia Brown"
CD: The Ultimate Anita O'Day (Verve)
Comment: "Dig" is based on the changes of "Sweet Georgia Brown," as is O'Day's version of the song, haha. Should've brought in Brother Bones' version, but I didn't.

Charlie Parker- "Embraceable You"
Cd: Yardbird Suite: The Ultimate Charlie Parker (Rhino)

The Beach Boys - "Loop de Loop (Flip Flyin' in an Airplane)"
CD: Endless Harmony (Capitol)
Comment: One of the many legendary Beach Boys outtakes that has been sprung from the vaults in the last decade. Al Jardine took the 27-year-old unfinished master and finished it in 1998 for this CD, making it, essentially, one of the last new official Beach Boys releases featuring all of the original group members.

Brian Wilson - "This Song Wants To Sleep With You Tonight"
CD Single: MCA Europe
Comment: A track on Brian's European-only-CD-5 single of "Do It Again," this is one of the few tracks from Brian's collaboration with Andy Paley that ever made it to an official release. I'd love to hear him re-do it with his new band.

The Beach Boys - "Good Vibrations"
CD: Endless Harmony (Capitol)
Comment: A rehearsal take from 1968.

The Beatles - "I'm A Loser"
CD: Live At The BBC (Apple)

Unkle Max radio show playlist for Monday, October 3, 2005
8-9 AM, WRFM
Technical problems abounded but the first show of the fall is out of the way.

Anita O'Day - "Sweet Georgia Brown"
(CD: The Ultimate Anita O'Day, Verve Records)

The Sunrays - "I Live For The Sun"
(45 on Capitol Canada)
Comment: Released in the USA on Tower Records; available on miscellaneous 60s surf compilation CDs)

Skip Heller - "Lost Weekend"
(CD: Out Of Time: Skip Heller Live In Philly, Dreambox)

Paul McCartney - "Temporary Secretary"
(Lp: McCartney II, Columbia-MPL)
Comment: This album currently available on CD on Capitol records

Paul McCartney - "Too Much Rain"
(CD: Chaos and Creation in the Back Yard, Capitol)
Comment: Paul's new CD is his best since Flaming Pie

Count Basie and his Orchestra - "Li'l Darlin'"
(Lp: Count Basie: The ABC Collection, ABC Records)
Comments: a- I'm not sure where (if) this collection is available on CD. It's a cheapo vinyl reissue of one of the Basie Orchestra's mid-60s live albums for Dot Records. b- Great typo: I mistyped this "Cunt Basie" at first. Ah well...

Branford Marsalis - "B's Paris Blues"
(CD: Romare Bearden Revealed, Marsalis Music-Rounder Records)

The Beach Boys - "California Saga: California"
(CD: Carl and the Passions- "So Tough" and Holland, Capitol)
Comment: A double play CD; this song is from Holland, released in 1973. And I preceded it with an original 1973 radio spot for the Holland album, from a --shhh!-- bootleg.

Fats Waller and his Rhythm - "The Curse of An Aching Heart"
(CD: Handful of Keys, Proper Box)
Comment: This is from a four-CD set of Fats Waller... not a bad bargain (under $30) but also not the best sound quality. Not sure what masters they worked from here, but apparently they were made during a time when engineers were still trying to "clean up" surface noise of 78-rpm masters by EQing all the high end off recordings. So it sounds kind of muffled. I know there must be a better sounding transfer out there somewhere; I'm keeping my eyes open.

Sir Douglas Quintet - "In The Jailhouse Now"
(CD: Doug Sahm, The Roots of Doug Sahm, Demon)
Comment: A great track from an oddball CD. The cover pictures Sahm c.2000 but the disc collects Sir Douglas Quintet tracks produced by Huey Meaux in the late 60s-early 70s. Great stuff and worth tracking down, but out of print and tough to find.

Lucinda Williams - "Passionate Kisses"
(CD: Lucinda Williams, Koch)
Comment: The worst thing about Mary Chapin-Carpenter's cover of this song is that a lot of people (like me) probably heard it and dismissed Lucinda's original, which blows MC-C's cover away.

Carl Perkins - "Glad All Over"
(Lp: Original Sun Hits, Rhino)
Comment: Or something like that... I forget the exact title, but it's a c.1985 Rhino remastering of all of Carl's best -known Sun tracks. This one I first heard covered by the Beatles on their BBC cd. I'm sure Carl's version is out there on a bunch of CDs; make sure you look for the Sun Records logo or credit if you want the original.

Monty Python's Flying Circus - "The Galaxy Song"
(Download from Itunes; from the soundtrack of The Meaning of Life)
