Unkle Max Radio Show for Monday, October 17, 2005, AD
8-9 am
The Beatles - Suite from the Live At the BBC CD (Apple)
"A Hard Day's Night"
"I Wanna Be Your Man"
"Roll Over Beethoven"
Comment: Complete with chatter between tracks; my favorite Beatles CD, in terms of the number of times I've played it on my show.
The Beach Boys -"Long Promised Road"
CD: Endless Harmony (Capitol)
Comment: Really nice 1972 live version of a track from the group's Surf's Up album.
Lucinda Williams - "Lonely Girls"
CD: Essence (Lost Highway)
Michael Nesmith - A long set of songs:
"Lazy Lady"
CD: Tantamount To Treason (Awareness)
Nesmith - "Only Bound"
CD: Nevada Fighter (Awareness)
Nesmith - "Highway 99 With Melange"
CD: Tantamount To Treason (Awareness)
Nesmith - "Roll With The Flow"
CD: And The Hits Just Keep On Coming... (Awareness)
Nesmith - "Different Drum"
CD: And The Hits Just Keep On Coming... (Awareness)
Nesmith - "Some Of Shelly's Blues"
CD: Pretty Much Your Standard Ranch Stash (Awareness)
Comments: A Michael Nesmith primer, in celebration of the announcement that his long-awaited new studio album, Rays, will be released shortly. Nesmith is one of the most interesting and influential figures in rock and roll history. A member of the Monkees, he established himself as an important solo artist through his work with the First National Band, and later in the 70s virtually invented music videos (and literally invented the idea of an all-music-video TV network, which he sold to Viacom as... MTV!). All of the above discs were originally issued on RCA Records and the vinyls aren't that hard to find; BMC Europe released them on 2-for-1 CDs (with bonus tracks); the Awareness CDs are single disc, domestic (USA) reissues sans bonus materials.
Those who want to find any of this material or more info on Nez are herewith referred to his official website, Michael Nesmith's Videoranch, where you can find both the BMG and Awareness discs, as well as other Nez material, including videos and lotsa news and downloads.
Miles Davis - "Dig"
CD: Dig (Prestige)
Comment: With Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean et al. One of my favorite early Miles tracks.
Anita O'Day - "Sweet Georgia Brown"
CD: The Ultimate Anita O'Day (Verve)
Comment: "Dig" is based on the changes of "Sweet Georgia Brown," as is O'Day's version of the song, haha. Should've brought in Brother Bones' version, but I didn't.
Charlie Parker- "Embraceable You"
Cd: Yardbird Suite: The Ultimate Charlie Parker (Rhino)
The Beach Boys - "Loop de Loop (Flip Flyin' in an Airplane)"
CD: Endless Harmony (Capitol)
Comment: One of the many legendary Beach Boys outtakes that has been sprung from the vaults in the last decade. Al Jardine took the 27-year-old unfinished master and finished it in 1998 for this CD, making it, essentially, one of the last new official Beach Boys releases featuring all of the original group members.
Brian Wilson - "This Song Wants To Sleep With You Tonight"
CD Single: MCA Europe
Comment: A track on Brian's European-only-CD-5 single of "Do It Again," this is one of the few tracks from Brian's collaboration with Andy Paley that ever made it to an official release. I'd love to hear him re-do it with his new band.
The Beach Boys - "Good Vibrations"
CD: Endless Harmony (Capitol)
Comment: A rehearsal take from 1968.
The Beatles - "I'm A Loser"
CD: Live At The BBC (Apple)
